Essay plan tutorial

Question – no problem you’ve focused on gender stereotypes rather than just feminism – and your plan follows that. Just make sure your research addresses both feminism and masculinity.

Introduction – I like the quote – use it above the question? For the intro, lay out argument, primary text and any secondary/historical texts. Present your angle/hypothesis. You can mention a theory or two but don’t go into detail – save that for later. 250 words.
Section 1 – historical text. Good start – that works with the question, Snow White is ideal for this and shows real research and film history. Get some textual analysis in here if you can. 250 words.

Section 2 – Primary text: The Hunger Games. Textual analysis. Media key concepts etc. Quotes/reviews etc. Research quotes on Katniss and Hunger Games. 500 words.

Section 3 – more historical/secondary texts. Calamity Jane. This looks great but make sure to do in-depth analysis – does it actually challenge gender expectations from the 1950s? Challenge may be linking these up – I’d consider moving this to section 3 and running it on from Katniss focus. 250 words.

Section 4 – more historical/secondary texts. Billy Elliot. This is ideal for masculinity and will provide plenty of opportunity for research/quotes/textual analysis. However, do you need to acknowledge for every Billy Elliot there are countless Hollywood films that reinforce gender stereotypes – F&F, Expendables etc. 300 words.

Section 5 – Effects theory and gender research - feminism. What impact do films have on audiences? Are young people influenced by movies? There must be loads of both academic texts AND Guardian/MM articles that explore this issue. This is a crucial section to demonstrate academic strength of essay. Perhaps divide research sections into feminism and masculinity? 400 words.

Section 6 – As above but for masculinity. 400 words.

Section 7 – How gender stereotypes and representation may look in the future. Is social media now the driving force in gender roles? Where will this debate be in 5 years? 10 years? 400 words.

Conclusion – sum up your argument, snappy ending please! 150 words.

Plan moving forward:
- Finish the plan
- Complete introduction before Wednesday
- Add more theory
